Serendipity brought Marija Curkovic to the information technology field while in college. While supporting the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and Mathematics department, Marija found herself providing extra support to the department in a technology capacity. Once people realized Marija was knowledgeable and solutions oriented, she became a “go to” person in this space. Marija studied electronics engineering but switched to information technology once the inaugural IT program was launched. This was the beginning of an exciting and challenging career path.
Marija joined Munich Re, one of the world’s largest insurance companies, in 2009 and currently serves as Munich Re’s Head of Business Solutions Canada (Non-Life) out of Toronto. Prior to that, she led the Global Application Development Services group, consisting of over 200 professionals, out of Hartford, CT. During this time, Marija successfully led the creation of ani-Innovate IT product team supporting all business units. In addition, her group built and deployed the first mobile app in the company, winning a finalist placing award in the Insurer category at the Insurance-Canada Technology Awards.
Prior to working in the insurance industry, Marija gained experience in a number of different fields including healthcare, government, oil & gas, telecommunications, hospitality, and consulting. Prior to joining Munich Re, Marija worked on the airport technology transition project for Vancouver Airport Services in conjunction with Chicago, Illinois’ Midway Airport.
Marija enjoys playing all kinds of team sports and has been an athlete at various levels of competitiveness, giving her traits to help throughout her career. Marija played elite level rugby and was at one time a part of the Canadian National Women’s rugby team. Most recently, Marija has resumed playing ice hockey. While in Hartford, she played on a men’s team when she had trouble finding a women’s league.
Now back in Toronto, Marija is enjoying playing on a women’s Hockey team. She speaks four languages – English, French, Croatian, and tech!
